Is Starlink Internet best for gaming?

Let’s find out! Is your Starlink Internet best for gaming or not?

Well, there are a lot of other Internet services in the market alongside Starlink. But if you are a gamer, you must want the fastest one around, so that it doesn’t disrupt your online gaming. To know if your Starlink Internet is best for gaming or not, read this article till the end and find out yourself.

We will also discuss the different ways to improve your Starlink performance and speed. Have a look at the Starlink availability map and find out if you stay in the high-speed Internet zone or not!

Is Starlink Internet the best for Gaming?

Starlink almost works well for most online multiplayer games. But it can be hard to tell how well it will work for you until you try it out.  It is true that Starlink internet can be beneficial for gaming, but that all depends on your expectations.

A small delay doesn’t matter in many different kinds of games that don’t require precise timing. Nonetheless, recently online gaming was facing issues on a satellite Internet connection. Satellite internet has not been able to compete with the sub-20 ping times. This can be experienced with some wired connections, with ping times in the hundreds of milliseconds.

At first, Starlink was not an exception. Ping times have improved significantly as a result of Starlink’s reworked networking protocols and the launch of additional satellites. Some users now report ping times between 30 and 80 milliseconds.

Even though this isn’t quite up to par with other options. Most people won’t complain because it’s now good enough. However, if you want every advantage possible during a fierce match, you probably shouldn’t switch just yet.

Starlink continues to work on increasing their latency in the hope that one day they will be able to provide the same or better gaming experience. This is a much expected wait for the  competitive gaming community.

How is Starlink’s performance impacted?

Unfortunately, performance is impacted by a wide range of factors, which is why this is the case.

  • The specific place you stay, for instance, is one factor that has an impact on the performance of your Starlink. Depends on how many other Starlink customers live in your area. Whether or not there is a clear view of the sky from your dish. The time of day and the current weather. The total number of devices connected to your network. All these things depend on your Starlink speed.

  • These have an impact not only on your download speed but also on your ping, or latency. Many people are unaware that download and upload speeds have little effect on the performance of online gaming. Instead, the ping and jitter are what matter
  • Normally, our Starlink dish should associate with satellites far up overhead. There is an inescapable measure of ping while information is being moved. Ping times typically range from 80 to 180 milliseconds, depending on the aforementioned factors. Also, to know the actual speed of your Starlink Internet, look here.

How can Starlink improve gaming performance?

  • Unfortunately, there isn’t much else you can do except set up your dish so it can see the sky clearly and connect your computer to the router via ethernet. The satellites are hundreds of miles above Earth, so there is no way to significantly reduce latency.
  • However, we suggest getting a second internet package from a different company that uses a different kind of internet service if your budget allows for it and it is available in your area.
  • DSL internet packages may be available in many rural areas, serving as an additional ISP for your household. For instance, satellite internet and 12.5 Mbps DSL are the only two options in our area.
  • I normally use Starlink to browse and download games because it has significantly higher speeds. Switch to a DSL line for improved ping and decreased jitter when playing competitive online games.
  • Since even a few Mbps is sufficient for most games, this would be considered the best option. The ping of wireless 5G for your home should be lower than that of Starlink if it is available in your area. After the games have been downloaded, online gaming doesn’t use a lot of data. So, you shouldn’t have to worry about hitting any data caps set by 5G ISPs like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.
  • Utilizing two ISPs in your home can provide you with the best of both worlds if your finances permit it. The best part is that you will still be able to access the internet even if Starlink goes down.

Conclusion

The Starlink satellites are much closer to Earth than those of HughesNet or Viasat. However, for other satellite internet providers, the ping is still very noticeable. As a result, it will rarely have a ping that is as high as that of a wired connection like DSL, cable, or fiber.

Even if the download speeds are higher, this will typically result in worse gaming performance. I know from personal experience that most games don’t bother me. I am in a “waitlisted” area when I use Starlink’s RV service. This indicates that Starlink has already stated that my area is full. My gaming performance is still pretty good despite all these factors.
